On the national level, issues of poverty, unemployment, low and stagnant wages, rising inequality, environmental degradation, and working people being left behind are on the minds of all. We can see these very issues right here in Upstate New York and especially in cities like Utica. And with further issues like the outsourcing of jobs and increasing automation weighing on the minds of many, there is growing sense of worry in our communities.
This is why we at Central New York Citizen Action, in partnership with The Community Foundation of Herkimer and Oneida Counties, are enthusiastic to formally announce the very first Community Wealth Building Conference in Upstate, coming this November. This exciting event will bring stakeholders and the public together with activists, experts, and practitioners of innovative new models of economic development in order to begin discussing an actionable agenda for a new path forward- one that tackles the issues described above.
This event will take place from 7-9 p.m. on November, 2nd at the Desales Center (309 Genesee St., Utica, NY 13501) and from 9 a.m. -2:30 p.m. on November 3rd at the Westminster Presbyterian Church (730 Broadway, Utica, NY 13502). On the first day (November 2), we are pleased to have a keynote address by Jessica Rose, CFO and Director of Employee Ownership Programs at the Democracy Collaborative, a leading national organization in the field of new forms of economic development. Rose has and continues to work in Rochester to foster equitable and sustainable community development, making her experiences and insights especially valuable. On the November 3, we are equally excited to have a series of panels on the topics of innovative policies, alternative ownership models, non-extractive finance, and social enterprises. We will also be hosting a series of workshops on related topics including the use anchor institutions such as hospitals and colleges to spur economic development for low-income people.
This event is free and open to the public. Lunch will be provided without charge. If you are interested in taking a leading role in deciding the future of Upstate New York and in putting our communities on a path towards shared prosperity, please register and let us know that we will see you there!
Please consider making a donation or sponsoring the conference.
